4 Ways to save on New Kitchen Cabinets

Construction & Contractors Blog

Are you planning a kitchen remodel? If so, one of your biggest components will be your kitchen cabinets. The cabinets are among the largest and most heavily used items in the kitchen. They're also one of the first things that your guests see when they enter your kitchen. You probably want cabinets that look amazing without busting your budget. The good news is that you have some options to do just that. Here are four tips to help you save money on your new cabinets:

Get Cabinets with Veneer Cores

Wood veneer is a thin, composite material that is made to look like wood. Veneer cabinets are usually available at a fraction of the price of real wood. However, many people don't use veneer because it often doesn't have the exact same appearance as real wood. One way to save money, though, is to get cabinets that use veneer in the core of the cabinet and then put a wood liner around it. Your cabinets look like real wood even though they're much lighter and much less expensive.

Use Half Overlay Doors

Cabinets usually come with two types of door styles. One is full overlay and the other is half overlay. In a full overlay, the doors nearly touch each other when they are closed. In a half overlay, there are a couple of inches of exposed cabinet in between each set of closed doors. They both function well. There's just a slight aesthetic difference. You may actually like the appearance of half overlay better than full overlay. Either way, you'll save money with half overlay because less material is used in construction.

Selectively Use an Expensive Finish

You may be set on an expensive finish that would bust your budget. Just because it's too expensive, though, doesn't mean you can't use it. Instead of using the expensive finish for your whole cabinets, just use it selectively as a unique style choice. For instance, you could use the finish on your island or on a built-in banquet. That will draw eyes to that feature and allow you to affordably work your favorite finish into your kitchen.

Mix and Match

There can be a huge range in prices for kitchen cabinets. Custom cabinets may cost you an arm and a leg, while mass produced cabinets at a discount store could be very inexpensive. You can get the best of both worlds by mixing and matching. Get the cabinet boxes from the discount store. Then have cabinet doors custom made to match the boxes. You save money on the boxes while still getting the appearance of custom cabinets.

A Study Of Wood Flooring Materials, Tools, and Techniques

Hello, I am Deborah Stillen. My passion for hardwood flooring began at a hotel on my first vacation as an adult. The gorgeous hotel flooring was made of a mix of mahogany, walnut, and teak materials that looked exotic to my eyes. Before that, I had only lived in places with wall-to-wall carpet. Upon coming home, I began to devise a way to cover my floors in wood materials. I became an expert on all of the wood flooring options available on the market today. I also studied different installation techniques and the tools used to create amazing patterns with the wood. My house now features a fine mix of bamboo and recycled wood flooring to create a layout I adore. I hope you can use the information on this site to bring wood floors to your home. Please visit often and learn all you can about wood flooring.
